Many people have asked me how I ended up in this business so I decided to share the following story with you:
While growing up in Westchester I used to run with Bosco, my German-Shorthaired Pointer, very often. Sadly Bosco passed away, and although I planned on continuing my running I found on numerous occasions I would get bored quickly and would stop after only 10 minutes. It wasn't until many years later that I would rediscover a passion for running.
Shortly after receiving my MBA from Pace a close friend of mine adopted a Yellow Lab, Amber, from the pound. As I was in the process of interviewing for jobs, I had some free time and my friend asked me to help him with Amber for a few weeks while he interviewed dog walkers. Instead of walking with Amber I decided to jog her in the park- she loved it and I loved it.
Taking Amber home from the park one day, I saw a dog walker leisurely walking with a few dogs in a pack. I looked at Amber, who was panting from our run, and that's when the idea struck me. I realized strolling around the neighborhood with a walker, or in a pack, can't be nearly enough exercise for most dogs. Equating this in human terms, I decided that running errands around the neighborhood or walking a few blocks wouldn't be enough exercise for most people. So when I thought of what I wanted Running Paws to provide, I came up with this list:
- An individualized exercise program for each dog - Offer a quality service that is priced competitively with the rates of dog walkers - Focus on safety, fitness and reliability
Now further into this business than I ever imagined, I can tell you that we’ve been able meet my original goals and far surpassed them (see "Our Principles"). The simple answer to the original question is that I started Running Paws because of my love of jogging with dogs-and the idea came from a moment of revelation.
